Szeto-Schiller peptide SS-31 (Elamipretide/MTP-131) - mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide for cardiolipin protection, electron transport chain optimization, and mitochondrial dysfunction research.
SS-31 (Elamipretide, MTP-131) is a Szeto-Schiller mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide incorporating a 2,6-dimethyltyrosine (Dmt) residue that enables selective accumulation in the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM) at a concentration ~5,000x higher than cytoplasm. SS-31 binds cardiolipin, the signature phospholipid of the IMM, stabilizing its interaction with cytochrome c and preventing electron chain disruption and reactive oxygen species generation.
